FAQs
How is this different from existing platforms?
Event sites are scattered and prioritize business revenue over helping people discover what's happening around them. No single platform shows everything, whether it's an event or an open invite to hangout, in your area without social media noise.
How can we avoid bad actors?
The lack of account creation means that anyone can see your event once it has been approved. Anyone includes good and bad actors. General tips to maximize safety probability include:
- Do NOT share your personal home address anywhere in the event (we’ll remove it anyway if the request has been approved + posted)
- Do NOT create events/hangouts that are just you + invitee (e.g., event/activity requests that are non-group activities won’t be approved)
- Only use a public place as the location for your activity/hangout
- This is NOT a dating service in any way whatsoever; DON’T use it like one
- Communicate with interested participants using social media channels like Facebook/LinkedIn/Twitter or verified institutional email addresses (like @cornell.edu or @syr.edu) BEFORE meeting them
sgoingon does our best to verify the legitimacy of events and take extra steps to ensure the authenticity of hangout creators through means such as timestamp photos and social media account ownership proof. But ultimately, a bad actor can still trick us, so please exercise caution by following the bullets above. sgoingon is not responsible for any interactions that occur off of sgoingon.
What kinds of listings work best?
Events are great for organized activities that require a group of people to come together in person. Hangouts are great for informal and casual group activities. PSAs are great for announcements and information.
Do I have to pay or create an account?
Nope.
